By definition, a side hustle takes place in addition to (and likely completely outside of) a 9-5 — but that doesn't always mean it should stay a secret.

Filma, initial side hustle, full-time thing now.Picture this: Late at night, me, glued to my laptop, managing a busy day job and chasing a dream after hours. This was happening for more than 10 years, as I've been always a side-hustler.With my latest one, Filma, I learned that perseverance can really take you far, like going full-time with it. I challenged my beliefs around the need to choose between a stable job and pursuing my passions. However, it was a tough double life.During the daytime I was all about being the regular office engineer: meetings, deadlines, more meetings. But come nighttime, Filma was where I let loose, diving into my own business thing on the side. This wasn't just about keeping up with job stuff, it was about making room for what I really wanted to do, even with a packed schedule. The initial days were marked by a significant challenge: time. How could I dedicate myself fully to both my job and Filma? The mystery wasn't just in balancing it all but in overcoming the skepticism that both my own and others' would hint about the viability of turning a side hustle into a legitimate, full-time business. As Filma started to shape up, things got even tougher. Nights got longer, the workload piled up, weekends turned into workdays, but I didn't back down. I tried new stuff, fine-tuned my game, and bit by bit, Filma began to pick up speed. I realised then that sticking with your passion, even when things are not looking great, can really pay off. Then came the crucial time: keep juggling or dive full into Filma. Choosing to go all-in with Filma was a huge deal, mixed with nerves, excitement, and a deep-down belief that it was the right move. It was a clear sign that sometimes, to really get somewhere, you've got to drop the safety net. Now, looking back, it's a road fulled of tough lessons, wins, and realizing that flipping a side hustle into your main gig isn't just doable, it's totally worth it. Filma's shift from a side project to center stage is all about taking chances, holding onto a dream, and the guts to keep at it.I'm sharing my story hoping to light a spark in others to believe in flipping a side hustle into the real deal. It's not about the "best way" but finding "your way" through the ups and downs that come with chasing what fires you up.

I think I may well have turned into my dad. Before he died he had turned into a bit of a cynical old bugger for sure. I may be going the same way. The reason? The "side hustle".In recent years, the term "side hustle" has entered the mainstream. We all have a side hustle. If you don't have a side hustle you simply not pulling your weight. For many people, it's glamorized as a path to financial freedom and entrepreneurial success. At its worst it's "How to make a million bucks working 4 hours a week on your laptop in your garden - a 4-hour course costing $197", you know the type of thing. However, when you take a look at it, I reckon that for many a side hustle is just a second job. While the term "side hustle" may have a trendy and appealing ring to it, which it certainly does, the reality is that it demands the same time, energy, and commitment as any other form of employment.A side hustle means taking on additional work hours, often outside of the day job, which can lead to increased stress, reduced leisure time, and potential burnout. The romanticized notion of a side hustle often overlooks the sacrifices required to maintain this extra workload. If you are working on the side hustle you're spending less time with family and friends. That is the truth. There are only so many hours in the day and you can't have both, they're aren't enough hours. Not only that, the financial rewards of a side hustle are rarely as lucrative as they sound. Some people are making big bucks, but the reality is that for them, the "side hustle" is their main job, they just call it the side hustle because it helps with sales. For many the time and resources invested in a side hustle hardly ever yield the desired returns. Especially when you think about the lost rest & relaxation. A side hustle is simply a rebranding of the age-old concept of working a second job, only it's more acceptable because it sounds cooler. Before embarking on a "side hustle" maybe we should ask ourselves would I do this as a second job? Am I wrong? or am I missing something fundamental about the "side hustle" that clearly differentiates it from a second job? More importantly than my opinions on the side hustle, have I turned into my dad?

The concept of a “side hustle” has gained significant traction. Whether it’s to pursue a passion, supplement income, or build skills, many people are drawn to the idea of having a side business alongside their primary job. However, since having a side hustle could sacrifice leisure time, invest savings, or even risk burnout from overcommitment, it’s crucial to weigh the opportunity costs and ensure that such a venture aligns with your goals and circ*mstances. THOUGHTS ON SIDE HUSTLESMany of us have side hustles (kantemba) that supplement our regular income. There are many benefits of having a side hustle, including having additional income, and using it as a pilot for learning the vicissitudes of running a business, before launching in, full-throttle. But we must wary of the risks that side hustles can pose, especially to your regular job, the biggest being that it could start competing for your time with your regular job. Sometimes your side hustle may be in conflict with what your employers do... This is the reason some organisations do not allow their employees to also be in business. Running even a small business can sometimes be very stressful, and start to impact your work performance. To avoid problems with your employer, check and confirm that you are not prohibited from running a business.Never run your business on company time. It's a an ethical issue. If you can, find people that can run errands on your behalf while you work, and empower them enough to make decisions. Delegation is keyManage the scale of operations so that the side hustle does become too demanding on you. Never bite more than you can chew.Focus on things that you have a flair for, it's much easier to do things you are naturally good at.Weigh what's important whenever there's a conflict. Remember it's a side hustle, not the main hustle.
